The Micropile Installation Process

  1. Geotechnical investigation — soil bore logs identify the soil layers, bearing capacity at depth, and any obstructions. This informs the pile design
  2. Engineering design — a structural engineer specifies pile diameter, reinforcement, grout mix, depth, spacing, and connection details. Each micropile is designed to carry a specific load
  3. Drilling — using a compact rotary drill rig, holes are drilled through or alongside the existing footing to the design depth. In Adelaide, this is often 4–10 metres to reach past the reactive clay layer
  4. Reinforcement placement — steel reinforcing bars or threaded bars are inserted into the drilled hole. For higher-capacity piles, steel casings may be used
